Preparation!!

Before visiting the sites, we brainstormed on ideas on how to present our blog, and assigned to each of us two monuments to research on, to give the group a brief background of the monument when we visited each in turn.

After much discussion, the group finally decided on doing a monopoly-themed blog since most of us enjoy playing monopoly. All of us took to the idea immediately, and some proposed that the places we visited during the trail could be used as landmarks on the monopoly board.

Our research came mostly from the Internet and from two reference books that we borrowed from the national library. Books that we borrowed were: ‘Samuel, Dhoraisingam S. 2010. Singapore’s Heritage – Through places of Historical Interested. Singpore: Dhoraisingam S Samuel’ and ‘Wan Meng Hao, and Jacqueline Lau. 2009. Heritage Places of Singapore. Singapore: Marshall Cavendish Edition’. We felt that by collating information about the places from the Internet and books beforehand, it would make learning about these places more tangible.

Our heritage trail being located in the town area, allowed us to be quite familiar with the names of these places. However, none of us actually knew the history behind them and how it played a role in the days of early Singapore. It did make us feel embarrassed to be called Singaporeans, but we were determined to find out more. And off we went to play monopoly…
