Armenian Church

The Armenian Church, built in 1835, was dedicated to St Gregory the Illuminator, the first monk of the
Armenian Church. The design of the church was based on the Mother Church in Echmiadzin in North America.

Considered as one of George Drumgoole Coleman’s masterpiece, it has many Armenian architecture features like the vaulted ceiling.

Just behind the church is a parsonage, rebuilt in 1905 in memory of John Shanazar Sarkies by his wife, Nanajan Sarkies. < awwww> It now serves as the office for the church.

There is a memorial garden, holding the tombstones of several once influential Armenian pioneers. Some of which we recognized werethe Sarkies Brothers who founded the Raffles Hotel, Agnes Joaquim who bred our national flower, Vanda ‘Miss Joaquim’ and Catchick Moses who co-founded the Strait Times newspaper.
